An island of natural wonders
St. Lucia is blessed with awe-inspiring natural wonders. The soaring twin volcanic peaks of the Piton Mountains are the island's famous backdrop, reaching 2,400 feet into the cloudless Caribbean sky. They shelter the spectacular cascades and rock pools of Diamond Falls as well as a lush interior rainforest blanketed with prehistoric-looking giant ferns, wild orchids, and colorful tropical birds. Mount Soufriere is billed as the world’s only “drive-in volcano,” and features bubbling sulfur springs and steaming craters surrounding the famed volcano.
Closer to the shore, white- and black-sand beaches snake along coastlines fringed with palm trees. Scuba divers say that St. Lucia ranks high in the Caribbean for diving, particularly Anse Chastenet Reef with its shallow reefs, deep walls, and plethora of sea creatures packing the corals.
St. Lucia’s natural wonders are matched only by the cultural magnetism of quaint fishing villages and exciting traditional events. Lively cafes lining the island's gold-sand beaches provide refreshment and a break from the tropical sun. The busy capital city of Castries on the island’s northwestern tip provides sightseeing, open-air markets, entertaining nightlife, pockets of 19th-century Creole architecture, flavorful Caribbean cuisine, and many places to shop.
Elsewhere, explorers find banana and cocoa plantations, aged fortresses, and warm, inviting people proud of their rich heritage. Sailors gather at Rodney Bay Marina, the island's largest yachting port and chic entertainment hub. Conversely, the bayside fishing community of Soufriere, with its local marketplace and weathered buildings, exudes the provincial charm that reflects the relaxed coastal lifestyle of St.Lucia.
Our favorite beaches
Instantly recognizable from its starring role in the movie musical "Doctor Dolittle," this secluded bay is a real-life Caribbean fantasy. Steep emerald hills border three sides of the white-sand beach. A harbor serves as home to large ocean-going yachts. Refreshments and water sports gear are nearby.
Reduit Beach/Rodney Bay
St. Lucia's most popular beach, this long stretch of golden sand is adjacent to Rodney Bay and within walking distance of Rodney Bay Village restaurants and other facilities. You can arrange for water sports gear and lounge chairs at rental kiosks on the beach.
Glowing with ebony sands that reflect its volcanic origins, Anse Chastanet is backed by rolling green hills and lined with lush palm trees that provide a cool alternative to sunbathing. A sharp drop-off, coral reefs, and shipwrecks lure divers and snorkelers into the clear waters.
Anse de Sables
One of the island's most popular places for windsurfing, thanks to constant on-shore trade winds, this white-sand beach on St. Lucia's southern end is also a mecca for sun worshippers.
