  Gay-Friendly  |   Gay-Owned  |   Gay-Only  |   What to Look For
Gay-Friendly

There are countless gay-friendly properties around the world, and they can range from huge resorts to cozy bed-and-breakfasts. These establishments cater to travelers of all orientations - and they actively welcome gay travelers and treat them with the same respect as they do all of their guests. Your Liberty Travel Rainbow Specialist knows which of these mainstream properties roll out the gay welcome mat, and can help choose the best one for you.

Gay-OwnedBACK TO TOP

Hotels that are gay- or lesbian-owned often serve travelers of all kinds. They can include full-service, large hotels that are even affiliated with a chain, but just happen to have a gay or lesbian owner. Or they may be smaller properties that specialize in personalized service, and offer expert guidance to travelers about gay nightlife and other activities. Check with your Liberty Travel Rainbow Specialist for details about what these lodgings offer.

Gay-OnlyBACK TO TOP

A smaller category of hotels and resorts that limit their business to only gay men or only lesbians specialize in creating a welcoming ambience for their guests. These properties don't usually refuse straight people, but they focus their marketing on gay travelers, and the activities and atmosphere are usually tailored exclusively to them. If you're looking for smaller-scale lodgings and you're fine with limited services and facilities, these properties may be a good choice for you.

What to Look ForBACK TO TOP

Not all lodgings are created equal, but you'll have plenty of excellent choices. What you choose will depend on your personal taste, as well as where you are going. Location is always important, of course, so look for a hotel that is close to the attractions and activities that are most important to you. Style and ambience are equally important, as is being mindful of your price range.

From the big city to the secluded countryside, you'll obviously find an especially wide array of gay-friendly lodgings in the destinations most popular with gay and lesbian travelers. Wherever you're headed, you will need to decide whether you prefer larger or smaller hotels, and what location will help you make the most of your time.

Gay Lodging in the United States

Top gay hotspots in the US start out in California, where gay-friendly accommodations are easy to find in cities like San Francisco, Palm Springs, and West Hollywood. In these cities, hotels range from smaller establishments to trendy, full-service hotels.

The same is true of New York City, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Miami Beach. Gay-popular destinations like Key West and Provincetown, meanwhile, are home to a wide variety of cozy bed-and-breakfasts, where personalized attention is the norm.

Gay Lodging Abroad

EUROPE
France, the United Kingdom, and Germany are among the Western European nations where the gay-friendly tourism infrastructure is most extensive.

ASIA & SOUTH PACIFIC
Australia is the leader in the Pacific in terms of gay-friendly places to stay, but you can find pockets of welcome at hotels in Hong Kong and resorts in the South Pacific, as well.

LATIN AMERICA
Latin America provides the gay traveler with a wide selection of friendly accommodations in destinations like Costa Rica, Argentina, and Brazil. Closer to home, you can choose from an ever-growing variety of gay-friendly resorts in places like Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

CANADA
And our neighbor to the north, Canada, welcomes gay and lesbian vacationers at superior quality gay-friendly hotels in destinations such as Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Gay Pride  |   Sporting Events  |   Circuit Parties  |   Gay Days
Gay Pride

One of the biggest events for gays and lesbians around the world is the annual Pride celebration that has become a tradition in countless cities in the United States and elsewhere. Plan a vacation to coincide with Pride Day and you'll be reveling in so much more than the parade. You'll be surrounded by cultural performances, concerts, and parties.

During Pride festivals, you may find hotels offering special packages that include admission to some events and parties. But book early - the best-located hotels go fast.

Traditionally, June is the most common month for Pride celebrations, although they take place during other months too, depending on the destination.

In the United States
Some of the largest June events take place in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco.Fort Lauderdale's is in March.

In Canada
You can join gay Pride events in Toronto in June, and in Montreal and Vancouver, both in July.

In Latin America
Among the cities hosting the largest celebrations in Latin America are Mexico City, Mexico in June, and São Paulo, Brazil in May. That's followed one week later by a similar celebration in Rio de Janeiro.

In Australia
Sydney, Australia hosts a massive celebration called New Mardi Gras, which is one of the largest such events in the world.

In Europe
A dizzying collection of Pride events in Europe has its highlights in Hamburg, Paris, and Zurich in June, and in Berlin, Cologne, and London in July.

Sporting EventsBACK TO TOP

Gay and lesbian organizations stage some impressive sporting events throughout the year. For participants and spectators alike, it's a lot of fun built around some good-spirited competition at its best.

Among the top events are:

  • Aspen Gay & Lesbian Ski Week in January
  • Gay & Lesbian Ski Week at Whistler Resort in February
  • Dinah Shore Golf Week in March (which brings a large gathering of lesbians as well as other golf enthusiasts to Palm Springs, California)
  • Gay Ski Week in Lenzerheide, Switzerland in March.
Other sporting events include gay rodeos and the Gay Games, an Olympics-style gathering that includes competitions in just about every category you can imagine, as well as cultural festivals and parties. Just like the Olympics, the Gay Games are held every four years in a different location.

Circuit PartiesBACK TO TOP

Circuit parties, if you haven't been to one yet, are massive dance parties that raise funds for non-profit organizations. If you're up for dancing all night and seeing live shows in a wild atmosphere, all for a good cause, ask your Liberty Travel Rainbow Specialist to find out when and where some circuit parties will be happening. It's worth planning a vacation around one of these events at least once for the experience.

Gay DaysBACK TO TOP

Major amusement parks are popular sites for annual gatherings that bring together thousands of gay and lesbian travelers, plus their families and friends, to have a good time on the rides and attractions at places like Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Six Flags parks around the nation. Your Rainbow Specialist can help you find some of the best and plan a vacation there for you.

Ever dream of setting sail for the first time, or of reliving the fun you had on your last cruise? Here's what to expect aboard some of the fantastic gay and lesbian cruises you can book through Liberty Travel.

Just like mainstream cruises, gay and lesbian cruises vary widely, based on destination, ship, and ambience. You can take in the majesty of Alaska's wilderness, hop from port to port in the sun-drenched Caribbean, and explore the wonders of the South Pacific and Europe - all amid the company of peers. You'll visit beautiful and exotic destinations with spectacular onboard service.

Gay men's cruises are available to regions like the Caribbean, Mexico, and Europe aboard comfortably large ships, with onboard parties and activities that foster a highly social atmosphere.

Cruises for lesbians are also available on chartered ships with a variety of itineraries ranging from the South Pacific to the Caribbean. Extensive onboard amenities and professional entertainers make sure that you have plenty of fun between port visits.

Smaller ships can be a good choice if you prefer being around fewer people, or if you want to hit some lesser-known cruise ports. Windjammer gay cruises are very popular smaller vessel choices, and passengers can even choose to join in operating the ship.

And, Liberty Travel is the exclusive booking agent for the annual R (Rainbow) Family Vacation Cruise. Each July, this cruise that is exclusive to Rainbow families sails to a different location. Previous sailings have included such popular destinations as the Caribbean and Alaska. If this sounds like a good choice for you, be sure to ask your GLBT Specialist about it because only Liberty Travel can make it happen!

What type of vacation is right for you?

Before you book that next vacation, you'll want to be sure it's the right choice for you personally – not for the friend, sister, or neighbor who told you about it. Ask yourself a few questions to get an idea of what you personally are looking for, and share this information with your GLBT Specialist:

  • For your next trip, do you prefer an all-gay environment, or is gay-friendly enough?
  • Are you more interested in a bustling urban environment, or in a laid-back natural setting?
  • What are some of the activities that you hope to enjoy? Sports, nightlife, museums, sunbathing...what else?
  • Are there any regions in the world or specific destinations that you've always dreamed of visiting and would like to consider for this trip, or is there a place you already know and love that you'd like to visit again?

Once you've considered these questions, you're on your way to narrowing your selection down to a few good matches. The additional tips in this section will take your further along the decision-making process.

Package Deals and Tours vs. Independent Travel: What's the difference?

There are times when an escorted tour is the best way to go - and other times when independent or packaged travel works better for you. How do you choose well?

It depends on your personal preferences, of course, but also on the type of trip you're taking. Considering hitting the top attractions around Egypt, and want to do so in a gay-friendly environment? That would be extremely difficult to do outside of an escorted tour in that region. If you're planning on spending a fun-filled weekend in Fort Lauderdale, however, you won't need a guide. A Liberty Travel package with air, hotel, and rental car will fit your needs perfectly, giving you 100% control over how to spend your time.

In other words, consider what you want to do. The more complicated the itinerary or the activities – and the less gay-friendly the destination – the more likely you'll want to join an escorted tour. Packaged deals that include air, hotel, and car (or some combination thereof) are the best way for independent travelers to get a price advantage while keeping a flexible, independent schedule.

Is there any destination you should avoid?

Safety and comfort are a concern for any traveler. For gay and lesbian travelers, this can be a significantly greater concern. Some destinations and lodgings will actually turn away gay visitors, while others will not reject you, but will not make you comfortable – or safe – either. Your GLBT Specialist is particularly attuned to this aspect of your travel possibilities, so be sure to go over these concerns before making a final choice.

You might also want to be careful when considering All-Inclusive resorts - some have traditionally catered to heterosexual couples exclusively and, even as they relax their rules, still may not provide the most comfortable atmosphere for your vacation. It may be better to visit an All-Inclusive resort that is being “chartered” by a gay tour operator for a week, rather than risk a less than wonderful experience at a place with a poor or vague record with gay visitors.

You can sometimes tell how welcoming a destination is by the way its tourism office reaches out to the gay community. The tourism offices for the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, and Hong Kong, for example, all have made efforts to attract gay visitors by attending gay travel expos, advertising in gay media, and providing comprehensive information for gay and lesbian travel to their destinations. There are plenty of other examples like this - just read through the destination section to learn about some of the many wonderful places around the world that will happily welcome you. And, of course, chat with your GLBT Specialist for even more ideas.
